Celia Calderon is associated with both graphical arts and women's interests, though by no means so limited. In this print, she renders a Mexican woman with a longing, resigned, or possibly distressed look. She wears a simple dress and braids. The bare context of the scene suggests isolation or solitude. The scene is engaging because there is so much left unsaid and unknown.

Calderon is a celebrated Mexican artist who was a leading figure in Mexican graphical arts, earning an invitation to an important Mexican graphic arts collective, Sociedad Mexicana de Grabadores, along with other associations such as Taller de Gráfica Popular, another politically charged artist collective of which she was director for a time in the mid 1960s. This group exerted significant influence on the development of Mexican arts.

Her early death has limited the availability of her art at a time when its appreciation is on the rise. This print is very hard to find, making it worthy of special consideration. It is framed and matted notably in grey and peach. Signed in the plate lower right.
